Closer Inspection...| Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera | Frida and Diego often inserted the others likeness into their work. Frida portrayed Diego in a very loving way. Diego was always shown in the context of their complicated relationship. He could play the part of husband, lover, or child. Diego almost always portrayed Frida as a symbol or a political activist. Her presence implied something larger than her as an individual. She becomes in this painting the symbol for traditional Mexican art. | |||

| Sonia and Robert Delaunay | These are two works that seem to be another verse in the same song. Electric Prisim by Sonia makes her sensibility of color and movement obvious. By 1914 she has already made the jump to pure abstraction. Robert's Simultaneous piece painted just one year earlier shows some of the same elements but he includes a recognizable shape (eiffel tower). This work marries his cubist explorations with those of their explorations of color theories. | |||

| Gabriele Münter and Vassily Kandinsky | In 1903 Kandinsky and Münter have just begun their love affair. The portrait of Münter is rendered in a very expressionistic style and it is not a place that Kandinsky lingers very long in terms of his growth as an artist and the father of abstract art. Münter's painting of Kandinsky is painted in 1910. She portrays her lover in center of the painting. He is the focal point of the painting and connects the land to the women in the boat. Münter has painted herself at the the oars in perfect alignment with Kandinsky. Though these paintings are of a very different style they seem to convey the emotion of the painter for their beloved. | |||

| Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz | Although this photo and painting are from a time span of about nine years there are some interesting similarities. O'Keeffe was interested in painting New York and she captures that small feeling an individual might have looking at the night sky obscured by building forms. Stieglitz frames his photo looking at it head on but the buildings are back lit and create some of the same mood as the O'Keeffe work. | |||
