What's Love Got to do with it?

Artists are moved to create art for many different reasons, and with varying degrees of success. The artists on this site not only excelled in their chosen mediums, but were part of a relationship with a significant other who made equally interesting and important works of art. These strong personalities all played important roles in Modern and Contemporary Art as we know it.

During my research of these famous pairs, patterns began to emerge within the couples. It is possible to see the influence these relationships and collaborations had on these artist's actual finished work. Many of these artists found their muse in their significant other. They created portrait after portrait of their beloved. Others made work that contained common elements and color values. Still other pairs created pieces that were so similar it is difficult to tell which of the pair created it.

As I continued to explore this soap opera of the art world in the early 2oth century questions began to arise. How did historical and social context play a part in the art these couples were producing? Why had I never heard of so many of the women in these partnerships? How did these partnerships work to allow each person to honor their creative needs? What did their love affair bring to their art? These questions are just some of the ones that will be explored with this web site.
